–– Expert comment on internet filter ––

The Federal Government’s plans for an internet filter have come under renewed

criticism, after Australia’s third-largest internet service provider, iiNet, announced it

was pulling out of a planned technical trial.

Critics say the proposed ISP-level filter, which would block sites featuring child

pornography and material advocating terrorism, would slow internet speeds and

stifle free speech.

How will iiNet’s refusal to participate affect the credibility of the internet filter trial?

What are the technical issues involved in filtering or blocking websites at ISP level?

How would the filter in its current form affect internet users?

Are filters effective in blocking illegal or dangerous material on the internet?

What other options are open to governments wanting to filter illegal internet

content?

RMIT University’s Dr Mark Gregory is an expert in internet security.

Dr Gregory is the Program Director of Network Engineering at RMIT’s School of

Electrical and Computer Engineering.

He is available for comment after 1pm today on the latest developments in the

Federal Government’s plans for an internet filter.
