Aussies divided over blocking mobile

phones when travelling more than 5km/h

A survey of over 1200 Australians, conducted by Youi insurance, has indicated that

Aussies are divided over whether phone companies should disable mobile phones

when they are travelling more than 5km per hour.*

Hugo Schreuder, CEO of Youi Insurance, said “54% of Australians believe phone

companies should be stopping people from making or receiving calls when they are

travelling over 5km per hour.”

“This is an interesting finding given the increasing trend for Australians to be involved in

car accidents when making or receiving calls or text messaging whilst they are driving.”

“As a leading motor vehicle insurer, the more we can encourage Australians to drive

safely on the road, the better,” he said.

In Australia it is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving unless you use a hands free

in-car kit or portable hands free device.

According to the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (ATMA) there are

now 22 million mobile phone services in Australia.**
