Expert comment on Facebook and social networking –

A “pro-rape” group set up by on Facebook by past and present Sydney University

students has been widely condemned.

While it was up, the group was public and open, with its members clearly identified.

How does online social networking lower people’s usual social inhibitions?

What ways do people’s online personas reflect their attitudes in the non-virtual

world?

RMIT University academic John Lenarcic is an expert on the ethical and social

aspects of the internet.

A Senior Lecturer in RMIT’s School of Business Information Technology, Mr

Lenarcic frequently comments on issues related to online social networking.

He is available for interview on the ethical and moral issues related to the “pro-

rape” Facebook group.

For interviews: RMIT University’s John Lenarcic, 0410 131 580.

For general media enquiries: RMIT University Communications, Gosia

Kaszubska, (03) 9925 3176 or 0417 510 735.
