MEDIA ALERT - Sydney, Australia – 30 October, 2009

Sand’s Up! Towel Surfing Hits Bondi Beach!

What:

Bondi Beach, home to some of the world’s greatest surfers, became home to a new surfing

phenomenon today when Towel Surfing was born! Over 200 people joined in synchronous dance on

their towels to the music of Australian music icon Ben Lee in a perfectly choreographed routine that

amazed onlookers.

It started with one, lone individual, who walked through the crowd of sunbathers and surfers and

placed his boombox on the sand in the middle of the crowded beach and pressed play. What followed

was a contagion of rhythm and dance as one by one other beachgoers joined in began surfing on their

towels.

They kicked their feet, paddled with their hands and bobbed up and down checking for waves – all

while remaining on their towels, dry on the pristine sand of Bondi Beach.

At the conclusion of the dance, a huge ‘wipe out’ occurred and all the dancers fell back on their

towels, and continued reading their books, putting on sunscreen and generally behaving like nothing

happened.

Why:

Bondi Beach has long been associated with surfing. Dating back to the early 1800’s when it was

forbidden for convicts to bath in Sydney Harbour because of sharks and stingrays and for reasons of

“decorum” and despite being official banded until the 1900’s Aussies have always been fond of this

iconic beach. Famous also for its surf culture, Bondi Beach was the perfect place for the new

phenomenon of towel surfing to be born, just in time for summer!
