mirasol Display Fabrication Facility

SAN DIEGO, CA., June 2 /PRNewswire-AsiaNet/ --

Nature-based, Reflective, Low Power Displays to be Manufactured

                            at Generation 4.5 Fab

Qualcomm MEMS Technologies, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm

Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM) today announced that a dedicated mirasol(R)

display fabrication plant in the Longtan's Science Park in Taoyuan, Taiwan

has commenced operations. The Qualcomm facility is the result of a strategic

collaboration with Cheng Uei Precision Industry Co. Ltd., (Foxlink) (TSE:

2392), a leading developer and manufacturer of communications devices,

computers and consumer electronics. Foxlink will play an integral role in the

operation of the mirasol fabrication facility, which is dedicated to

manufacturing mirasol displays on generation 4.5 glass.

"Emerging technologies such as mirasol displays have the power to

influence the entire wireless value chain," said Paul Jacobs, chairman and

CEO of Qualcomm. "As we continue to demand more from our mobile devices, it

is clear that the display not only is increasingly influencing the consumers'

experience but also is driving the total power efficiency of the device."

"The mirasol facility is game-changing for Qualcomm MEMS Technologies, as

its capabilities move us closer to delivering next generation mirasol

displays to the market with increased efficiency and in greater quantities,"

said Jim Cathey, vice president of business development for Qualcomm MEMS

Technologies, Inc. "With our technical expertise and Foxlink's background in

manufacturing, we are well positioned to enable the commercialization of

mirasol display technology; that's the charter of the mirasol fabrication

plant."

Foxlink, one of the world's leading makers of communications devices,

computers and consumer electronics for multiple Fortune 500 companies, will

leverage its extensive manufacturing experience to provide the day-to-day

operations of the mirasol plant. Qualcomm MEMS Technologies will bring its

extensive knowledge of this emerging technology and its process engineering

expertise from QMT's dedicated teams in Taiwan and from the state-of-the-art

Qualcomm MEMS Research and Innovation Center (MRIC) laboratory in San Jose,

California. Both teams drive the development and commercialization of mirasol

display technology and products.

"The mirasol display holds great promise and we look forward to our role

in taking this technology from the laboratory to manufacturing on a greater

scale," said James Lee, president of Microlink Communications Business Units

and Systems Business Group of Foxlink. "In the hands of the Foxlink team and

the capable engineers of Qualcomm MEMS Technologies, we are confident that

mass production of this technology can be accelerated in terms of volume,

scale, color and time to market."

Today's announcement will be followed by an official opening ceremony of

the dedicated mirasol fabrication plant on June 15. The opening will be

attended by top Taiwanese politicians and key partners and executives from

Foxlink and Qualcomm, including Paul Jacobs, Qualcomm's chairman of the board

and chief executive officer. In addition to remarks by stakeholders, the

ceremony will include several traditional Taiwanese rituals to mark the

occasion.

Qualcomm's mirasol displays constitute a technology breakthrough that

promises substantial performance benefits over competing display

technologies. Based on reflective technology, mirasol displays use

significantly less energy than traditional displays. The display's

nature-inspired design lends to low power consumption and high reflectivity,

offering consumers extended battery life and superior outdoor visibility. The

bistable nature of the mirasol display allows for near-zero power usage in

situations where the display image is unchanged. Furthermore, mirasol display

technology's rapid refresh rate makes it suitable for video and multimedia.

    About Qualcomm MEMS Technologies, Inc.

Qualcomm MEMS Technologies Inc. has developed the industry's first direct

view micro-electrical mechanical system (MEMS) display for mobile devices - a

true technological innovation that offers low power consumption and superb

viewing quality in a wide range of environmental conditions, including bright

sunlight. The display works by reflecting light using interfoermetric

modulation (IMOD) so that specific wavelengths interfere with each other to

create color. The phenomenon that makes a butterfly's wings shimmer is the

same principle applied in Qualcomm's mirasol displays. Using advanced MEMS

technologies, mirasol displays support Qualcomm's overall innovation strategy

of increasing the capability of mobile devices while minimizing power

consumption. Qualcomm MEMS Technologies Inc. is headquartered in San Diego,

Calif., with offices in San Jose, Calif., Taoyuan, Taiwan and Hsinchu,

Taiwan.
